sigh. my baby is getting too big for his sling so I"ll have to move on to the ergo here pretty soon. there's something so sweet about they way he is cradled in the sling, i'm going to miss it. I wore him at a wedding over the weekend (all the other kids were in the nursery but mine was happy being cuddled in the sling next to me although his feet were hanging out a bit too much. Maybe i'm sad because it partially represents the fact that he's moving past being a newborn.
I also ran into a lady who told me that ergo's are good for big babies, does anyone else agree? James is fairly big @ 13 weeks he's Just over 16 lbs.

Re: outgrowing his sling
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 7:36 AMErgo's and Beco's are the best on your back for carrying heavier babies. I also had a wrap that did a great job of distributing the weight, and i only switched to the Beco when he hit the "pick me up, put me down" stage. At that point, a carrier with buckles you could just clip and unclip became a godsent. (BTW- my son's 2 yrs old and 30? lbs and i don't think he'll outgrown it any time soon. You can totally carry through toddlerhood.)
Aw- i know how you feel. I hated to see my little newborn outgrown his "newness"

Re: outgrowing his sling
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 7:58 AMThat tribe is a good place to start.
I would suggest moving on to a Mei Tai, pouch sling (need to be custom fit), or ring sling.
I'm not necessarily promoting this site (I haven't purchased anything from them), but they have pretty good examples of the various sling styles pictured there.

I made pouch slings for my husband and i and we carry our two year old in them when she wants to be picked up.
Baby wearing doesn't have to end at infancy if you don't want it to :-)

Re: outgrowing his sling
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 11:25 AMi carried abigail in my hotsling until she was a little more than 7 months old ... i forget how much she weighed, but she was neither big nor small. i carried her with her back to my chest, with her legs crossed "indian style" .. then we switched to the ergo, which was so much better for us for breastfeeding. -

Re: outgrowing his sling
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 11:31 AMi never mastered the art of nursing in the ergo but i LOVED it -- yes, the cuddly closeness of the sling is nice, but the ergo is snuggly too, but in a more engaged way -- i felt close to her but i could also make good eye contact with her and see her face... then when she'd fall asleep her head would nestle into my chest. it's still sweet, just a little different. -

Re: outgrowing his sling
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 2:27 PMI've never gotten a sling to work for us - my breasts always seem to take up 95% of the space in the sling and she's awkwardly bent over. My husband can carry her in the same sling just fine, but I have to use the Bjorn, which I dislike. Wish I could afford a pretty Ergo!
