Is it to soon?

My baby is 9 days old and eating at the boob like a champ. So much so that she sucked me dry yesterday... I just couldn't get her satisfied. She like most babies has an oral fixation... She likes boob, she also likes to suck on her own hand and she likes to suck on both mine and daddy's fingers... and she knows without a doubt which one has food. I want to introduce the pacifier to her soon because I think yesterday was more about the oral fixation than it was about being hungry but am wondering if we should wait a little bit longer. I will be introducing the bottle of pumped breast milk around 5 or 6 weeks (so I can go back to work).

    It's possible that she's entering a growth spurt, and is nursing more to get your boobs to make more milk. I'd just let her nurse on demand as much as she needs to, rather than giving her a pacifier. Just my two cents.

    our binkie attempts were soundly rejected, but if i were to ever try again, it would be at around the same time as the breastmilk bottle.

    i totally agree with lizzer, she's gearing up for that 1st growth spurt ...

      Part of letting her suck you dry, as frustrating as it may be for you, is to give your body the signal to ramp up and start producing more milk. This wonderful feedback between mama and baby is what allows your body to adjust to her increasing and decreasing needs at different times. Diverting her to a binkie will deprive your body of knowing that it needs to make more milk for her.

      not that i don't understand- jeez, i woulda killed for a break during those first few weeks if my son had been willing to take a paci (which i tried after about 2 weeks)

        Rent movies and catch up on reading! I know i felt chained to the couch and boppy for those first few weeks, in fact, I can't remember doing anything other than sleeping and breastfeeding during growth spurts. Take a mental break from bfing especially if your nips can't!

          my little had a growth spurt at about that time, in fact in his first month he gained 4 pounds. Just drink a LOT of water. Your body keeps making milk while the babe nurses. It has amazed me during growth spurts, {{is there any milk...squeeze..all be damned!! there is!}}}
