tyrashow.warnerbros.com/thisweek/ scroll down to motherhood controversy. i will try to find clips online later. i watched the segment in which 2 breastfeeding mothers, including the woman who breastfed both her girls until they were nearly 8, were routinely attacked by audience members who repeatedly insinuated that extended breastfeeding holds sexual connotations. it was heartbreaking to watch & i really fell behind the brave mothers onstage. the audience was split in half, one side consisting entirely of working mothers, the other side, SAHMs. the working moms were brutal in their accusations & one woman, in response to a mother's description of breastfeeding as being "pleasurable", had the gall to say, "i have 3 letters for you: C-P-S" as if she should have her children taken away because she enjoys nursing them! i was fuming.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 5:10 PMI really hate that media driven "working moms vs. stay-at-home moms" horseshit they put on TV.
I have friends that work, friends who stay at home....and you know what? we all get along JUST FINE. Moms have enough going on working, in or outside of the home, so why incite us to fight amongst ourselves!?
GRRRRRR!!! -

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 8:40 PMouch. man that blows. women at their worst. it is too bad that breastfeeding continues to be so controversial since it is such a no-brainer and a natural fit for most of us. wow. guess i just don't get the us and them dichotomy --feed your kids YOUR way as long as the baby is well fed and mama is happy why would it be anyone else's business?
hmm we have a long way yet to go as mamas it seems -

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Fri, July 4, 2008 - 5:24 AMi love that there's no way to contact the show directly, only through the tyra "community" ... i'd love to write a letter and give it to those producers & ms. banks.
no offense intended, but this is why i don't watch television anymore, save for PBS or HBO ... the stress level created by talk television is too extreme for me .. oprah, keith olbermann, entertainment tonight, FOX .. even modest ellen whigs me out when she has the we-survived-a-tornado kind of guests.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 4:20 PMI don't advocate the attacks and don't care for those shows myself, but 8 years old seems extreme. I figure by the time they have a good set of teeth and good control of their hands they should be eating big people food. By age 8 I hope to have at least 1 more soothing technique at my disposal.
The WHO says until age 2--that seems like a reasonable age to be weaned.
Part of the anger is the working moms dealing with the guilt laid on them for not nursing all day long. Many women have to work for the health insurance and they get trashed for not breastfeeding more.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 5:02 PMit is sad how society as a whole doesn't support breastfeeding- not for moms at work, not for moms at home. i think that's why they need to set women up against each other- keep 'em from uniting for real change.
And the whole point of using the 8 yr extended nurser as an example is to set up a straw man for *all* nursing mothers, given that most "extended" breastfeeding is under 3 yrs.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 5:09 PMI seriously can't stand watching Tyra. She is completely annoying, and unless it's about modeling, doesn't know what she is talking about. I cannot bear to watch what she did by pitting woman against woman. I am a working mother and would love to stay home but it's not in the cards for me. I did, however (and still do), nurse my 2 1/2 year old. She has never had any formula. We will nurse for as long as is comfortable for the both of us. Do I hate or have any animosity toward formula feeding mothers? Absolutely not. They are doing what they feel they need to do to feed their children. Do I think stay at home moms are horrible because they are not trying to further their careers? Absolutely not. They are able to be home to raise their children (a rare event in this society). I don't see any one way as the "right" way to raise a family. You do what you are able to do, and as long as it's a loving, caring, responsible home, then what right do I have to say anything negative about it. argh... soooooo angry and disgusted. -

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 6:29 PMto each is own.
I personally do not advocate bf'ing past 4ish. Not because I believe that there is any sexual connotation, but for ME it just doesnt seem right.
With that said, I do wish that my children would have nursed longer. :( -

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 1:48 PMI really like Tyra and the way she tries to help people but this really upsets me. I don't think nursing to 8 years old is necessary but I firmly believe in extended breastfeeding. Has anyone found a way that we can contact her and tell her that this is unacceptable?

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Thu, July 10, 2008 - 12:05 PMStaying at home verses working is so irrelevant to whether or not you breastfeed. I went back to work when my daughter was 3 months and was able to nurse her until she was 18 months. Which, by the way I felt was a good time for us personally to stop. To each their own, I guess, I mean 8 does seem old.
BUUTT labels do bother me and all the little nit picky things that mothers choose to tear each other down for-i.e. using formula vs. bfing- strollers vs. carriers, pacifiers, crib vs. co-sleeping and on and on.
P.S. every time I seen Tyra's show it seems as though she is trying to stir up shit, which seems to be working for her. -

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 1:44 AMI personally do not plan to nurse my kids past the age of 3, my son is 15 months old and we are nowhere close to weaning.
" I figure by the time they have a good set of teeth and good control of their hands they should be eating big people food."
I will say as weird as it seems to nurse till the age of 8, to me it's weird to drink milk from a cow into adulthood. If cows milk is considered big people food then why isn't breast milk considered big people food, atleast for a baby with a full set of teeth. In my opinion the above "should" should be changed to "could". It is afterall healthier for the child to have milk from it's own species. -
-
Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 6:20 PMI dont think cow's milk is people food at all, its for baby cows. But I so love cheese! However, you couldnt get me to drink moo juice if you paid me.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 9:05 PMI am loving Goat's milk right now. I had goat milk yogurt the other day and it was SO yummy. It tasted like mild goat cheese with fruit in it. yum.
I am thinking about giving Georgia goat's milk yogurt when she is old enough. The composition of proteins in goat's milk is a very close match to human milk and therefore much easier for baby to digest. :)
As for moo milk. I love the stuff. Dunno why.
Babies between the ages of 1 and 2 need fat for brain development. Human milk has the PERFECT balance of fat for a child that age. But, if you choose not to breastfeed cow's milk is just "ok." The preferred milk is Goat's milk. It actually has MORE fat than cow's milk and it's better for babies. Even Dr. Sears agrees. Check it out!!

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, July 28, 2008 - 10:10 PMOh yes, goat milk is way more closely related to human milk than a cows. -
-
Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 12:15 AMthe reason why goat's milk is easier for humans to digest is because it is designed for a species with only 2 stomachs, unlike cow's milk for a species with 4 stomachs.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 5:20 AMgoat's milk was a great relief to me during my last weeks of pumping when abigail was 10/11/12 months old ... i pumped what i could (5-6 ounces total in two pumping sessions over two days) and left a sippy of goat's milk just in case.
it really relieved the stress of providing enough for her while i was gone.

Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 1:14 PMIt is weird that we drink cow's milk. I do love cheese and yogurt though and adore ultra heat pasteurized milk, which you can finally get in the US. But it is weird.
But is it any surprise why? Check this out: children.webmd.com/news/200...s-changed "Dairy is very important for child development." from the woman at the AAP who also happens to sit on the National Dairy Council. Um, can anyone say conflict of bloody interest!
Kind of like why now, out of the blue, we're supposed to be giving these drops with vitamin A, D and I think E to breastfed babies. Hmm, I wonder which doctor also sits on the board of the drug company who makes them. It's to prevent rickets, which is genetic. -
-
Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 5:50 PMactually i'd disagree with the vitamin assessment. Most kids won't get rickets because sun exposure takes care of it, but even if supplementing is recommended there's a million different companies that make vites and it's doubtful anyone on the AAP is making money.
i'm 100% behind the milk industry connection tho. just as bad as the crib manufacturers funding the study that says babies should sleep away from their parents in their own space, aka a crib. -
-
Re: tyra banks tears down extended breastfeeders
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 6:10 PMExactly--a little bit of sun is all you need. Our pediatrician told us that, and then a month later pushed the drops on us even though some moms reported their kids were getting upset stomachs from it. Note--these are new drops, not just vitamin D. The nurse even said she suspected the vitamin A (toxic if given too much) was causing the upset tummies.
Someone at the AAP may not be making money directly, but there are other ways. We asked the nurse how do we know which brand of vaccine the doctor will have at the time of the shot and she basically told us, "Whatever drug rep comes to the hospital with the cheapest cost." And who knows if it stops there.
Basically it's covering her you-know-what because the minute the AAP recommends something everyone else has to push it, regardless of their personal opinions. Many doctors just don't think for themselves anymore because they're afraid to get sued.
I hadn't heard about the crib thing--that's just wrong.
