at last well appointment, Pilar was diagnosed with mild thrush. we were prescribed nystatin, given 4x daily orally. ( such high frequency because it works via contact with the inner cheeks, and so we're supposed to give it to her when she's very sleepy. )
well. she swallows it straight away, haha. therefore i don't bother stressing out about giving it to her every chance we get ... she prefers long naps once or twice a day, so there aren't even 4 opportunities a day to administer while she's nodding off. not to mention i don't much trust this stuff .... i mean, what did people do about thrush back before the advent of drugs like nystatin? and it's such a mild case, she doesn't seem to be bothered by it ....
doc said we'd need to give her this stuff for MONTHS ..... please help me find a better and hopefully more natural solution.
if the most effective and healthiest method is to continue the nystatin, of course i will do that.
thanks in advance. all the best,
H

Re: thrush
Sat, June 21, 2008 - 10:28 AMdiluted vinegar rinse for baby's mouth and your nipple, very diluted gentian violet swab, used sparingly, goldenseal tincture applied topically, yogurt, acidophilus powder... these are the major players when fighting thrush, which is a yeast infestation.

Re: thrush
Sat, June 21, 2008 - 2:20 PMmake sure the yogurt is plain & sugar-free, if you use some. sugar is what yeast eats, but the acidophilus eats the yeast. in related business, a yogurt douche is good for yeast infections, just squirt it up in there. raw garlic suppository is an excellent yeast infection fighter, too. in fact a raw garlic clove is all i use when i get yeast infections!

Tue, June 24, 2008 - 9:49 PMAlso...wash your bras daily and let them dry in the sun. Yeast HATES the sunshine and will die. Also expose your breasts to the sun a few times a day for a few minutes.
There are some more GREAT tips on Dr. Sears' website.

Re: thrush
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 11:23 PMI used gentian violet (diluted by the pharmasist) and other than the lovely deep shade of purple that it has a tendency to dye things... it was a life saver! It got rid of the thrush, the yeast on my nipple, and from thebabies diaper area too... good stuff.... messy but thourough and quick!
