from mothering magazine:
Edwina Froehlich Passes On
Edwina Froehlich, cofounder of La Leche League International and coauthor of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, died at 5:00 AM on
Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Northwest Community hospital in Arlington Heights after suffering a stroke on May 25.
In 1956, Edwina Froehlich and six other women met in Franklin Park, Illinois to support one another through breastfeeding their babies. The group quickly grew and became La Leche League International. "In those days you didn't mention breast in print," Froehlich has said. "We knew that if we were ever going to get anything in the paper we would have to find a name that wouldn't actually tell people what our organization was about." La Leche League International now has groups in every US state and in 68 different countries. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding has been translated into eight languages and Braille.
Edwina has done in her lifetime what many of us can only hope to accomplish: she has helped enrich the lives of thousands of mothers and babies.

Re: la leche founder passes on
Wed, June 25, 2008 - 8:49 AMAnother nice thing- all seven of the founders were alive and present at LLL's 50th anniversary conference last yr.
Her passing was very beautiful. She was in the hospital kind of touch and go for over a week and mama's from all over the globe were faxing in personal stories, either of encounters with her or of how LLL has helped them and their babies. He sons read her these stories continuously while she was conscious and she got a big kick out of them. They even read them to her while she was in a coma, just because they were so touched and overwhelmed at the magnitude of love and gratitude.
the hospital said they'd never seen anything like it- their fax was often jammed and couldn't keep up with the load. -

Re: la leche founder passes on
Wed, June 25, 2008 - 8:32 PMjessica that is so awesome. i totally teared up reading that!
for a person to be on her deathbed and be surrounded not only by the love of family and friends but also to become aware of her impact on the lives of perfect strangers is not only touching but truly awesome.
i can only hope that i am able to touch a fraction of the number of lives that she and her cohorts did in my own lifetime.
