Hi all. I was wondering if you all could point me to some good resouces (books, online, etc) regarding my diet and my breastmilk. One thing I'm really curious about is how long it takes for the things I eat to matabolize into my breastmilk. For example, I used to drink a small amount of caffinated coffee each day and I'm wondering how long it takes for the caffine to get out of my system or is it going to go to my breastmilk regardless. Since my daughter has been born 18 days ago I've drank coffee about 10 days. I haven't had any for 3 days now. I also have stopped drinking cow milk for 3 days now but I want to find out how much that may or may not affect her. There is other stuff too but those I think are the 2 best examples.

Sat, June 7, 2008 - 7:04 PMi don't actually know the answer to this question, but it reminded me of something funny i used to do sometimes:
sol would be crying or whatever & i'll be trying to finish my food quickly. i'd say "hold on, mommy's gotta make some milk", then i'd shut my eyes tight, grunt & "strain" like i was forcing the milk production. it made me laugh, anyway, which was helpful in a potentially tense situation with a screaming youngster.

Sun, June 8, 2008 - 7:14 PMHiya... I don't know any good books but I have some thoughts to share. Basically, anything we consume our baby gets in small doses. There have been studies of caffeine and breastfeeding and supposedly a small amount (say 4oz) a day is "safe" to drink. Every person (babies and adults) react different to caffeine at different times so one baby may not be affected while another will. Even though caffeine is safe it is a sleep disrupter as alcohol is... it changes our sleep patterns. I haven't drank coffee in a week because I'm trying to find out if Phoenix's sleep improves. We've had trouble with MANY night wakings since he was a tiny guy. He'll be 1 in two weeks.
