lately while nursing my girl has been popping off the nipple to look at me...she engages my eyes and then she jumps back on and eats for a little bit and pops back off and looks at me again.
she looks at me, she smiles and relatches. this goes on for a while unless she is really hungry --like first thing in the morning-- and then she latches and nurses steadily til she has had her fill. it makes nursing take a really long time.
so i keep thinking this popping on and off the 'oob' is her way of having conversation over her meal.
i can't help but laugh. it is this private conversation we have while she nurses. i had to share. she eats like the french--with purpose and over good conversation.
LOL

Re: on and off while nursing
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 1:36 AMi never thought of it as "conversation"! that's cute! and totally exactly what it is. it melts my heart every time he stops nursing to gaze up & smile at me. i relish these moments because i know in just a few short years, he won't like his old mom as much as he does now. -

Re: on and off while nursing
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 10:33 AMi do love it. i have stopped pumping since we left the snow and though today our pump (along with the rest of our house) arrives in my new house, i really like the nursing time we have. we have been exclusively nursing since early february and i have loved it and at times felt a little tied to it of course but the good outweighs the not so good.
she is however taking a keener interest in what we are eating these days so i am sure solid foods aren't in the too distant future...........
i love to kiss her little warm head while she nurses. it is my favorite! i am sure i get as much out of it as she does. -

Re: on and off while nursing
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 7:14 PMMy favorite is when Fred looks up at me while nursing and the corners of his mouth turn up as he smiles and continues to nurse while gazing at me with his big beautiful blue eyes. It's just heaven...

Sun, March 23, 2008 - 10:41 PMI never thought of it that way, but yes - a goofy little conversation!

Re: on and off while nursing
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 6:39 AMYeah, I like thinking of it as conversation as well. It is so sweet. Ewan started this thing a few months ago where he blinks his eyes at me while nursing. I blink back and we wrinkle up our noses at each other. We go back and forth like this a few times until he cracks up. I love our private exchanges.

Re: on and off while nursing
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:33 PMJuniper does this too! And it's like, every three seconds, on off on off on off with the big goofy grin, like she's playing a game or something, then very serious nursing face while she eats for a second, then the big goofy grin again...love it, although I fear it is a sign she is losing interest in the breast... -

Re: on and off while nursing
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:41 PMI should say that it's actually other things she's doing that make me fear she's losing interest, but when she refuses to stay latched on and fill up after sitting under her for 45 minutes, and then eagerly takes a bottle and wolfs it down without distraction 20 minutes later, I do worry that bf'ing is just not her preferred feed any more. -

Re: on and off while nursing
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 11:43 AMnot to totally go off topic but Andie, what kind of nipple are you using? If you are breastfeeding and supplementing with formula, you should stick with the slow flow nipples for the entire duration that you breastfeed. That way, your little one will have less preference for the bottle over the breast, and it will better mimic the flow of the breast. We supplement with formula when PK is with her caregiver, and at 10 months, she still gets the newborn nipples with 4 oz formula, so it mimics her feedings at the breast. -

Re: on and off while nursing
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 8:28 PMSimone, that's a good idea. She tends to get frustrated in the same way with the slow flow nipples that she does with nursing...the sad reality is that it's impossible (or damn near) for me to nurse her every feeding, so bottles are a fact of life. I try to not give her a bottle when she could nurse instead, but she gets so worked up, and during the day on the weekends, my body is adjusted to thinking she will only nurse morning and night, so the flow is slow...I am really trying to go at least a year nursing as often as I can, but some of the nursing has had to concede to the fact that my role at work just doesn't usually leave me free to nurse her during the day, even though she is in the building with me. Pumping only goes so far to stimulate me to make more.
I appreciate the suggestions!

Re: on and off while nursing
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:44 PMYep, Anthea will do this, especially if there's anything at all to look at...light fixtures, ceiling fans, Daddy, my book. I have to be all vigilant because when she abandons her task, she leaves the faucet still running so to speak and we get milk all over everywhere. Me, her, the couch, whatever. I had no earthly idea that nursing was such a messy messy business. She grins ear to ear and I clap the washcloth to the boobie to keep from soaking us both, it's awesome. I had to kick Daddy out of our nighty night nursing sessions because he was laughing so hard that she got even more distracted. She will only really get down work if we do side lying down together nursing. I feel like a momma cat. -

Re: on and off while nursing
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:49 PMAndi, seriously, take her to a quiet reasonably dim place with no toys or any distraction, try a few different nursing holds, and then harden your heart and don't give her any more bottles. She'll work for it when she has to. And the work is good for her, the muscle activity from nursing is super good for her facial development on several levels. It won't hurt her at all to be a little hungry, just offer her the breast as much as you can over the weekend (be a momma cat) and don't offer any bottles. She'll take her time, but she'll get all she needs eventually.
I' m wishing you good luck and good nursing! -
