at around 6 weeks you should start to notice more of a cluster feeding type of pattern (at least in my experience with my 2 girls). you might nurse several times for several hours but then you'll get a 4-5 hour break a few times a day and at night. hang on, mama! dreams really do come true :)

oh crap, i'm a moron. i know your baby is around the same age as mine and i'm talking about the 6 week mark? DUH LOLA!! uh, can you tell i haven't slept in the last two days (thank you, sick toddler!).

anyhoo, yes, you should see some further spacing but all bets are off if he hits a growth spurt. as for when exactly, i'm not sure that it is consistent among babies. mine has been in cluster feed mode for the last month + but she may want to eat every other hour for hours still.

if you need a reprieve, start pumping and have someone give him bottles so you can get some you time. i didn't do that last time around but you bet your sweet bottom i'm doing it this time -- it's already time for me to re-stock my freezer, too.

Yup yup. That is what I have been doing. I will pump for a few days and get a good supply and then have someone else give her a bottle. I will either pump again an hour before or an hour after she would have eaten. I always have enough milk if I'm pumping often enough between feedings. It's nice to get a nice chunk of time to go out and get my hair done, get a pedicure, or go on a date with my husband.

I say it's all about how much you can keep him happy and distracted until said time interval has occurred. I had my ma around to help when they were 6- 11 weeks and I was so tired of bfing in the heat of summer under 3 pillows and 2 babies that we decided that they could go 3 hours (gasp! I know, evil but I was/am a desperate mama). We would dance them, rock them, go for walks, whatever we had to to give my nips a break. Sure, sometimes they would be hungry at the 2 hour mark and we could not convince them otherwise, but eventually they got used to that 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hour stretch. Now they go longer when the fun keeps rollin' but I get tackled if things slow down...
Also pumping bottles is a great way to get some freedom or some sleep.

I would do anything to go back to that time!! My son is going to be 1 year old on the 25th (of June). It went by SO fast! And he is little mr. independent now. I miss the days of being able to just hold him all day, nurse him and rock him. Enjoy it now. I understand how hard it is to be so attached and not have freedom.. I still feel that way at times.. but enjoy the early intense attachment as much as you can!

    Blessings,

AlyGirl - thank you...sometimes it's hard to see things that way because i'm too close to it. I appreciate you giving me a different perspective....i just needed to change my mind set a bit!

I appreciate all of the advice ladies...i'm getting mych better at typing with one hand and holding my little one in the other...he did well with distractions for about a day and a half and i was able to space out his feedings...but not over the weekend.....
