i'm 2 weeks postpartum and i am SO ready to resume working out, but i seem to recall reading somewhere that it can interfere with milk supply.
does anyone know if there is any validity to this? i would of course drink tons of water and make sure that i stay well hydrated....

Re: working out
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 11:30 AMI remember that early pp after taking a walk I would pump less. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't REALLY interfere with your ability to nourish your baby if you were getting enough calories and water. i'm no expert, though. -

Re: working out
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 12:17 PMWhen I finally started exercising pp (was about 8 weeks after), walking helped with my milk production. The first time I came back from a walk I looked like Dolly Parton. However, be careful about fatigue. I know that fatigue lowers my milk production.
What kind of workout are you thinking of? -

Dolly Parton hapiness
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 12:44 PMThat's great that you got quite the stockpile of mass nutrition (I apologize in advice for my humor.. I am still dialing the social knobbs for this tribe). Keina is struggling to produce for one, not to mention the other twin.
I will suggest some walking...
She is almost recovered from the cessection (did I spell that right?) so the advice is well timed..
thanks for the precious idea!

Re: working out
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 4:08 PMmy normal routine back when i had one kiddo was to take really long hikes (i used to average 20-30 miles per week) but now with two i am limited in my ability to do that with any frequency or regularity, so i'll be back to my old workouts i used to do in the middle of the night after a bartending shift which consisted of 1.5 hours of cardio (any combination of treadmill, bike, elliptical trainer). my bff is trying to talk me into getting into a step class, but we'll see about that! -

Re: working out
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 4:17 AMi started around 6 weeks pp
weights and a stationary bike, i don't recall any milk problems. but i remember something about the lactic acid build up passing into your milk- so as long as you don't over do it (to where you hurt-lactic acid) you should be fine. though, truthfully i didn't follow this advice....i exercised as i normally would w/o any probs.
if milk production is a concern, drink a tea made with fennel seeds, or just eat them. whoa, it is amazing how it helps the production. sometimes my b's can be EMPTY,flat..then an hour or so after tea the baby is nursing vigourously

Re: working out
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:33 PMtake it easy. there is a natural surge of energy so soon after birth but it won't last. light exercise will boost your supply but save most of your energy for healing and taking care of baby. -

Re: working out
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:31 PMi've been going to the gym every night this week and doing about 45 mins to an hour of cardio and it feels great. i haven't noticed any effect on my supply and it's nice to get a little break during the day....
i can't believe the babe was 4 weeks old yesterday!! -

Re: working out
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 3:48 PMYou're so LUCKY! When I was being discharged this poor earnest sleep deprived resident was giving me the run down. He said, "No exercise of any kind and don't lift anything heavier than your baby."
I said, "Dude, she's three pounds ten!"
He said, "oh...in that case, nothing over fifteen pounds then and no stairs."
I live in a split level so that was difficult. I cheated and went for very slow walks around the block. I felt like if I didn't move around that I was going to lose it. I never notice exertion even now having any effect on my milk supply, but it does make me crazy thirsty! -

Re: working out
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 3:56 PMdid you have a c-section? i know they tell women that have them to take it super extra easy, and to especially avoid stairs.
with both my babies i was what my aunt referred to as a "peasant girl" -- i dropped them and was ready to work the fields again right away. -

Re: working out
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:30 PMI always fondly imagined that I'd be a peasant girl, but no, I had to be a pre-eclamptic mess of a girl. I had an emergency C five weeks early because it was a tie for who was in more distress...her or my kidneys. But we were both eventually fine. I wish I'd had the brain power to have found this tribe right after the birth. I was a complete mess. Pumping for the NICU 8x15minutes a day and then I had horrible engorgement issues that took 6 weeks to slack off because they'd all told me I had to pump so much to make sure my milk came in adequately. Then the blasted La Leche League website said that if you have oversupply issues, to stop pumping. I thought my boobs were going to pop. Thankfully I called my lactation person and she scolded me to stay off websites and to pump for my life, but about a minute less every time each day until after a week I could start skipping some pumpings. I've never been so miserable as the first 6 weeks. I've mercifully been forgetting it bit by bit. I just have to say though, that if any of you ever have oversupply issues or know someone who has, try not to kill all those well meaning individuals who tell you how lucky you are to have so much milk. Then tell them about the miracle of red sage tea.
I also fondly imagine that if I do this again in another year or so that I'll be a peasant girl this next time and everything will be perfect. :)
