our new little man will be 2 weeks old today...i'm over tired so i hope this isn't too jumbled...
he has horrid foamy poops and massive amounts of crying to accompany the pain of all the gas in his tummy...i'm assuming that is why his poops are foamy? he can't seem to pass them on his own and we had to do a glycerine suppository because of his night time misery (this is the 3rd night) for hours at a time my husband keeps mentioning formula and that our new little man must be reacting to something in my breastmilk. i'm getting depressed because i don't want to be making my newborn miserable by trying to feed him.... i've been eating chicken and rice, drinking water and mothers milk tea and i'm taking the vitamins i was taking in pregnancy....(multi-vit, vit c, zinc, calcium and fish oil)
i had a breast reduction in '01 so i have been THRILLED to breast feed.....i'm worried that i have too much milk coming out after the let down. he really gulps and sometimes turnes away to get a little break...my other breast leaks while he is nursing.
please any suggestions are welcome...i'm going to call the La Leche League in my town tomorrow to see if they have any suggestions.

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 5:12 AMa couple of things really quickly before i go make breakfast for our girl ...
(((((mommahugs)))) i know how scary a new little person can be, but ...
YOU'RE DOING GREAT! keep nursing, *everything* you're doing sounds like just the right thing! momma's milk makes your little man happier than he'll ever know, always know you're doing the absolute best thing for him.
if he's gassy, formula will only make things worse. plus, the more formula introduced the less breastmilk there will be. it's a supply & demand thing. other mommas will speak about the BFAR aspect, but it sounds like your new guy just needs a little time to catch up to your supply, which is like, amazing, seriously! i thought of it like teaching her how to drink from a straw .. sometimes you have to help them not to suck it all down at once.
the only thing i would suggest is, depending on how much mother's milk tea you're drinking, cutting back on one cup. abigail wasn't thrilled when i started it at 10 weeks, maybe she was gassy, but i know for sure she was CRANKY, and happier when i stopped ... i didn't *need* it ... but, cutting back may help you're little man.
LLL will be a great help to you, also ... those women are fountains of helpfulness and information.
oh, and if i may make one more suggestion ... don't be afraid to really burp your your guy ... firm, rhythmic pats with a slightly cupped hand on the back (that little spot just before his spine curves, under the shoulder blades) will really get that gas up and even if they've belched, the rhythmic patting soothes them.
aaaaak! screaming toddler ...
go momma go!! you're doing great!!

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 6:47 AMfear not! burp that little guy with gusto ... he'll thank you for it, cause it's gotta come out somewhere, better up top than down below.

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 11:18 AMI was also going to suggest burping! Sometimes it would take half an hour to get a burp out of Aidan but man it payed off.
Also, I had a forceful letdown and sometimes I would just let a little milk dribble out by gently squeezing the breast so it wasn't so much for the little one. Also, my midwife highly suggested always completely emptying the breast before switching to a new one. This way the baby gets as much fatty hind milk as possible.
Good Luck and remember to try and RELAX. Newborns go through all sorts of awkward phases and next thing you know, this will pass and a whole new "issue" will present itself.
All of this said though, if none of this advice helps it can't hurt to at least ask the pediatrician to be on the safe side. If you don't like what they say you can always get a second opinion.

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 9:08 AMmama... i feel for you. keep it up, you're doing exactly what you should be. breastmilk is what your baby needs. formula will definitely make him more gassy.
the foamy poops can be part of all the milk you're producing, too. i have had that "problem" as well. since you have such an abundant supply, your baby can tend to get filled up on the foremilk. the hindmilk is the fattier, less watery, super-nutritious milk that he needs. you're right - that's why he's gulping so much. my lactation consultant gave me some advice that helped me. i started pumping (you could just express not to save even) one time before or after the morning feeding. it seemed to go against my instincts, but it really helped. her poops became the right color and were not so explosive. talk to you local LLL for sure! they will help!!!
your body will start to regulate very soon. it just doesn't know how many babies you had and how much food they need, it'll figure it out soon, i promise. also, watch the gassy foods you're eating. anything in the cabbage family (broccoli, leafy greens, etc), beans (soy, coffee and chocolate included), onions, etc. very simple foods are the best in the beginning. just until you both figure out what's going on.
good luck with everything. you can do it!!! -

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 10:13 AMit is very common for frustrated and tired people to start to think that something must be wrong with the breast milk when the baby almost inevitably gets screamy/squirmy/gassy or won't sleep and has what looks to us like weird poops..........it is almost never the breast milk.
LLL ladies will help you out. our girl was very unhappy in her belly for about a month or maybe two and it was hard on us and her. there was a lot of squirming and screaming. it gets better. hang in there.
we had heavy and hard let-downs, gulping, and a hard time getting the burps to come out but we just kept trying. we would shake her up and down like a soda pop before we thumped her back for the burp and that actually worked like a dream. it seems a bit strange at first but my aunt and my mom showed me this handy trick that really works.
sometimes i would pump or express before i fed her to relieve the pressure and she wouldn't gulp as hard and get as much air it seemed.
we just do what we can. delaney really liked being draped tummy-down over my knees too and bounced sometimes to soothe when she was feeling particularly yucky---i would let her suck my finger too and for a while there it was the only way to get her to sleep.
keep at it. this too shall pass.

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 10:41 AMhey lyla!
ok, i'm going to first ask why you're giving him suppositories. from what i've just read, glycerin supps are a laxative! it seems to me they're going to make his bowel problems worse. his issue is not constipation, it's gas. does his discomfort seem to follow a pattern? like, can you pretty much predict when he's going to start crying inconsolably? if so, it's probably colic. it's no fun at all, but you can get thru it.
second, my boy was gassy/colicky for his first 3 months. i cut out tomatoes, onion, garlic, broccoli & cauliflower in hopes of easing his pain. i gave him a tablespoon of chamomile tea at night with 2 hyland's homeopathic colic tablets dissolved in it. that settled him down. i would suggest looking into gripe water & gas relievers in your natural foods store. homeopathics are safe at every age & stage in life.
third, my dh suggested formula too, but the issue was not my milk, persay. it was the food i was eating & his little system just gearing up. formula will make your situation worse. and way to go on the abundant supply! that is unusual from what i hear of bfar.
keep trying. i know it's hard, but as his brand-new system adjusts to life outside the womb, it passes. -

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 11:41 AMdoc said the suppositorie were ok because he wasn't pooping after the meuconium left and he needed a little help....his tummy was rock hard and he didn't seem to be able to move the new poo out of his body. he pooped fine after that but the frothy ones seem to take longer for him to move out of his body.
i have chamomile tea and if it happens tonight i'll give it a try and next time i'm out we will check out some of the homeopathic remedies.
i called the LLL and they suggested infant massage, feeding him more upright and a warm bath with him on my chest among other things. i'm going to check out the next meeting and see if my nursing technique is somehow allowing too much air into him.
thank you for all of your suggestions! i'm going to keep going with the BF and hope that we figure out what will work for him. -

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:38 PMLyla, hang int here with the breastfeeding. I had a reduction about 10 years ago and struggled to breastfeed but at 14 months now our breastfeeding relationship is stronger than ever.
Do yourself a favor and read Diane West's book "Defining Your Own Sucess: Breastfeeding After Breast Reduction Surgery". It will help you more than any pediatrician or lactation consultant can. Also check out the forums at bfar.org There are many women there who are breastfeeding after reductions successfully and you will get a ;lot of help and support. Ther can answer your specific questions with regards to breastfeeding after a reduction.
I goptta dash but feel free to PM me with any further questions. You are doing a wonderful job for you baby and remember that breastfeeding is best. -

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 9:15 PMJust want to ditto what others said. My boy was very gassy in the beginning. I rolled him around on the floor sometimes to get a burp, bicycled his legs when he seemed to need help pooping, and for burping I sometimes held him up upright above my head a little and bounced gently. I don't know why that worked, but it did. I also let him sleep on his tummy, which if his butt was sticking up seemed to help him pass gas. I was right next to him and he was an extraordinarily healthy baby and I knew in my gut he'd be fine because, really, I don't think I slept at all the first few months for lying there with my hand on his back to make sure he was still breathing!! -

Re: help i'm getting bummed out
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 6:30 AMthings are going much better....he is still fussy late at night and passing some gas but it seems just like a normal baby fussiness and it's on and off for 3 hours or so. He rests in between and is able to nurse: )
I gave him a warm bath yesterday ... he was on my tummy and i think that helped relax him a bit...i drank chamomile tea and did the homeopathic remedy for colic three times during the day....we also did the leg bends when he was passing gas.
so far so good... he is still on the boob juice! -

Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:14 AMWell done! I'm so glad to hear that you're both doing better. Take things one day at a time and one feed at a time. This is a marathon not a sprint.
